Thoughts for the month:

Change takes guts. It takes imagination. It takes commitment. –John Taylor

I don’t believe people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive. –Joseph Campbell

Be willing to make decisions. That’s the most important quality in a good leader. Don’t fall victim to what I call the “ready-aim-aim-aim syndrome.” You must be willing to fire. –T. Boone Pickens

A good athlete can enter a state of body-awareness in which the right stroke or right movement happens by itself, effortlessly, without any interference of the conscious will.  This is a paradigm for non-action: the purest and most effective form of action.  The game plays the game; the poem writes the poem; we can’t tell the dancer from the dance.

Less and less do you need to force things,
Until finally you arrive at non-action.
When nothing is done,
Nothing is left undone.

Tao Te Ching, Stephen Mitchell translation

Good leaders surround themselves with good people, who in turn become good leaders. –Michael Nolan

Welcome to the Quad City Leadership Alumni Association Website.

Please contact szelnio@quadcitychamber.com if you did not recieve the e-newsletter and are part of the alumni association.

What does leadership mean in a community whose glory days were during the 20th Century?  According to Richard Longworth in “Caught in the Middle,” it means it is time to reinvent the community and to make it part of the global marketplace.

New, this year, both Community Leadership and Leadership Essentials will be looking at issues raised by Longworth in his book.  This added concentration to the programs will translate to a look and then taking action into transforming this area to compete successfully in the new reality of a “flat” world.

Join the Quad City Chamber of Commerce Federation, this fall, and discover for yourself, how you can be part of the process while learning.

We are now accepting applications for the next classes in Fall of 2008.  Look under the Academy button or click for an application or brochure.  We are beginning to fill up--so don't delay!

****************************** An effective community is one that works together to solve problems and improve the area’s quality of life. To build an effective community, one must first build effective leaders armed with proper tools and a general understanding of the overall community.

With this in mind the Quad City Chamber of Commerce Federation came together to develop a new Quad City Leadership Academy.

The new Quad City Leadership Academy was introduced by the Quad City Chamber Federation in the fall of 2006. The Academy is designed to equip participants with the skills needed to successfully lead their company and community. The program also inspires and offers participants opportunities to experience our community and allows participants to learn from each other as well as established leaders.

The Quad City Chamber Federation, a non-profit organization comprised of the Bettendorf Chamber of Commerce, DavenportOne, and the Illinois Quad City Chamber of Commerce, was created to address common business issues and heighten the image of the Quad Cities. The Quad City Chamber Federation serves as a vehicle for launching collaborative events, projects, and initiatives among the areas Chambers of Commerce. One of these initiatives includes leadership development and the collaboration of the existing leadership programs into one academy for the region.
